Description

This is a cartographic celebration of the often underappreciated Seabees (Construction Battalions), working and fighting in every theater of operation during the Second World War. Ervine Metzl, a well-known artist, drew the maps while a lieutenant in the Navy’s Civil Engineering Corps, William Huie, wrote the accompanying text.

Ten pictorial maps total are included – Oahu, Guadalcanal, Trinidad, New Georgia, Adak Island, Espiritu Santo, Italy, Bougainville, Los Negros, and England & Normandy. Each shows memorable events, construction projects, landmarks, and areas of engagement. Noted activities range from constructing airfields under enemy fire to carving totem poles “which they sold to gullible Merchant marines as the genuine articles.”

A beautiful and insightful record of the significant contributions paid by the engineers of the United States Army and Navy. Published in 1944 by E.P. Dutton & Company, Inc.
