Description

This complete March 25, 1916, issue of Scientific American was published in New York by Munn & Company, Inc. Just about ten days earlier, U.S. forces under the command of John J. Pershing invaded Mexican territory in an attempt to capture Pancho Villa. The Mexican revolutionary leader had earlier raided Columbus, New Mexico and killed several American civilians, resulting in the ‘Punitive Expedition.’ An article titled ‘On the Trail of Villa’ offers a wealth of exciting details about the chase, including photographs and one small map of the border area. Other notable contents with cartographic elements include reporting on the status of the Western Front in WWI and a ‘War Game’ played by Lieut. Guido von Horvath (formerly of the Austro-Hungarian Army).
