This amusing pair of promotional maps uses Chattanooga’s location on U.S. Highway 41 to full effect. Before the construction of I-75, which closely parallels the route between Rock City and Miami, Highway 41 was the primary artery for southbound travel to Florida.
Looking to capitalize on vacationers heading in both directions, this strip map cleverly shows Chattanooga’s convenient location situated almost perfectly halfway between Chicago and Miami. The connection to the latter terminus was completed in 1949, and in 1953 U.S. Highway 41 was extended to Miami Beach.
The smaller map measures 3.25″ x 16.75″ while the larger version measures 4″ x 21.5.” Both were issued around 1951. Prices is for the pair.
