Description
This eye-catching map of Illinois presents a wonderful collection of illustrated vignettes that capture the historic breadth, natural beauty, and varied industries across the state. Great attention is given to outdoor attractions and entertainment, including fishing, hunting, and game refuges. The seven locations of the Lincoln Memorial Highway and the Lincoln-Douglas debates are also noted.
These debates, prompted by the senatorial race of 1858 between Abraham Lincoln and Stephen Douglas, were incredibly popular and highlighted the schism over slavery that would eventually boil into the Civil War. Although Lincoln lost the Senatorial race, his eloquence during the debates boosted his popularity and that of the Republican Party, ultimately leading to his Presidential Nomination in 1860 (the Convention was held in Chicago).
Designed by E.H. Brown and R.A. Burleigh and published in Chicago by Rand McNally in 1953 under Governor William Stratton. Information on Illinois history, state parks, and memorials is provided on the verso.
