Description

This attractive woodblock engraving shows various scenes of amusement and commerce in Bismarck, the capital of the Dakota Territory, in the late 1870s. The composition includes a rough and ready crowd at the opera house, a thrilling ride along a wind-powered rail car, the sale of buffalo robes, ‘bottle groceries’ at a liquor store, and a Black Hills freight train.

Based on an illustration by W.A. Rogers and published in the December 14, 1877 edition of Harper’s Weekly.
