Description

This lovely pair of copperplate engraved prints presents six views of the Hawaiian Islands as seen from the ships of Captain James Cook. They were originally included as plate 83 in the English and French editions of accounts of his voyages, published in the mid to late 1780s.

The English version (18.25″ x 11.25″) was engraved by William Bligh (of H.M.S. Bounty infamy), whereas the French plate (16.9″ x 11.1″) was done by Robert Bénard. Each sheet shows coastal profile views of five islands, with accompanying descriptions. Both are heightened with attractive modern hand color.
