Description

“It was not the Russian people, but the autocracy that came to shameful defeat.” – Lenin (Text, bottom).

This overly simplified military map of Eastern Asia highlights the primary theater of conflict during the Russo-Japanese War (1904 – 1905). Troop movements and military engagements, including the Battle of Tsushima, Siege of Port Arthur, and retreat after Mukden are noted with bold arrows and symbols; detailed further in the legend (lower left). A text box opposite provides a chronology of major battles on land and sea. The upper text reflects the perspective of the map’s creators. It translates approximately to “Without declaring war, Japan unexpectedly attacked the Russian fortress of Port Arthur in January 1904 and inflicted serious losses on the Russian fleet stationed in Port Arthur.”

The map was created, probably in the 1970s, by the Official of Social and Economic Sciences of the Higher Party School under the Central Committee of the CPSU. It was used as part of the Communist Party’s educational programming.
