Description
This map of southern Los Angeles shows the areas served by the Cross Town Suburban Bus Lines, an independent transit provider that was absorbed by the Los Angeles Metropolitan Transit Authority in 1961. Simple black and white lines and circles reflect the twenty-three separate routes which covered an area of roughly 720 square miles in the greater LA area.
But geographic coverage wasn’t enough to keep the lines profitable – rapid transit consolidation in the 1950’s, low-density urban housing developments not conducive to public transport, and stiff opposition from LAMTA to any concessions ultimately pushed Cross Town out of business shortly after this map was published.
