Description

Popular in the early 20th century, volvelles were cheap to manufacture and designed to deliver a rudimentary geographic overview in a ‘fun’ way. This particular example, published in New York in 1931 by John Rossig, covers the continent of Asia.

Thirty separate countries are numbered within the map’s image and labeled along the outer wheel. As the user turns the inner wheel, various statistics are provided on that particular country. Of particular note are the Japanese Empire, Hejaz, and the Straits Settlements – an interesting snapshot of Asian political organization in the early 1930’s.

The verso features an advertisement for the volvelle’s sponsor, Cherry & Webb Co. of Falls River, Massachusetts. “A Woman’s Store that Entertains High Ideals of Service.”
