Description
A rare copy of a visionary prospectus for the new real estate development of Roseland, situated conveniently adjacent to the innovative and highly successful company town of Pullman (southeast of Chicago). Issued by local movers & shakers, the Van Vlissingen Brothers, the contents include a map of the Calumet District, a persuasive bird’s eye view, numerous photographs, descriptive text, and more. An article titled “The World’s Fair and Its Effect Upon the Calumet District and Roseland’ hints at the prosperity offered by the upcoming Columbian Exposition.
The ‘model industrial town’ of Pullman was established in 1880 to create the world-famous railcars, but exploitative circumstances (namely, refusal to reduce rent while laying off employees) would lead to the violent 1894 Pullman Strike just a few years after printing. The booklet is uncommon on the market and in institutional collections, with WorldCat noting only one entry (at UIC) as of December 2025.
