Description

This charming map of the Hudson Valley depicts the area from Glens Falls in the north to the waters of Long Island Sound in the south. An elaborate compass rose and strapwork title cartouche add classical cartographic elements, with portraits of Henry Hudson, Thomas Dongan, and George Clinton standing in as the dedicatory recipients. The map, first issued in 1937, provides an artistic representation of the historical and cultural diversity of the region. Major events including the opening of the Erie Canal and the first steamboat are immortalized in inset drawings, while vignettes of natural features, historic sites, prominent citizens and transportation milestones are scattered throughout the image. Paragraphs along the left and right sides of the map were updated with each subsequent printing in 1964, 1968 and 1972 and provide additional contextual information to places within the valley.

The career of George Annand, the original author, spanned over 60 years and included a number of pictorial maps drawn for Nabisco, General Foods and Sinclair Oil, in addition to Rand McNally (the publisher of this version).
