Description
This detailed topographical map covers a portion of the Canadian Pacific Railway in operation across British Columbia and Alberta, just east of Calgary. It was issued as one sheet of the ‘Rocky Mountains Map’, published by the Chief Geographer’s office of the Canadian Department of the Interior in Ottawa, likely around 1895.
Apart from geographic features and contours, the map highlights the route of the railroad between Exshaw and Golden. Several of Canada’s ‘grand railway hotels’ are noted, including Banff Springs, Chateau Lake Louise, and the Mount Stephen House near Field. These luxury accommodations, some of the finest in the country, were generally constructed and owned by the railway in order to encourage ridership.
