Road Maps Pacific Coast Highway [Title on Verso]

A cartographic road trip along America’s West Coast.

“The Pacific Highway, stretching along the entire Pacific Coast from the Mexican Border to Canada, offers a diversification of scenery found in no other section of the United States, and the motorist who has not traveled over this smooth, paved highway and visited some of those points of interest has indeed a treat in store for him.” [Text, lower center].

This interesting folding brochure and road map was published by the American Toll Bridge Association in 1928 to encourage automobile tourism along the Pacific Coast Highway. Two of the company’s toll bridges could be crossed in Northern California at the Strait of Carquinez and the San Joaquin River, represented by photographs and descriptive text within the image.

The sheet presents highway maps of Washington, Oregon, and California with the primary routes highlighted in orange. An inset in the upper right highlights the location of the two bridges around the San Francisco Bay Area, while additional inset street plans show Sacramento, San Francisco, Oakland, and San Jose. Finally, two strip maps in the lower left identify further details about specific routes, including distances between points, traveler’s amenities, and geographic features. Eight additional strip maps on the verso break down the entirety of the Pacific Coast Highway between Vancouver and San Diego.
