Description
This three-part road map was published in 1923 (according to the state game laws on the verso) by the Honeyman Hardware Company of Portland, Oregon. The large emporium self-promotes at the top of the sheet as “The Only Store West of the Rocky Mountains That Maintains a Free Parking Ground for the Use of Patrons While Making Their Purchases.”
Advertisements for camp equipment, fishing supplies, and automobile components – all available at ‘Portland’s Largest Hardware and Sporting Goods store’ – are visible on the left side of the page. Of particular interest is the long list of recommended services necessary before beginning a long road trip.
On the right side are road maps of California, Oregon, and Washington; each submitted by their respective State Highway Department. In the case of the latter two states, paved and gravel roads are highlighted in orange and yellow, respectively.
The upper center shows a view of the Honeyman Hardware Company Warehouse – now on the National Register of Historic Places and renovated into luxury apartments. The verso presents a detailed guide, ‘Fishing in Oregon – Where to Go and How to Get There’, that provides a wealth of information for local anglers and outdoor enthusiasts.
