Description

Riverside, Illinois, was incorporated in 1875 as one of the earliest planned suburban communities in the United States. It was designed by landscape architect Frederick Law Olmsted and his partner, Calvert Vaux, who sought to create a picturesque village with winding streets, lush greenery, and ample parkland. Riverside’s founders aimed to provide a healthy and welcome respite from the rapidly industrializing urban environment of nearby Chicago.

This plan of the idyllic village was published in Lombard, Illinois by Sidwell Studio, probably around 1920 based on the State Bond Issue Route 18 running along the bottom of the page. Gently curving roads comprise much of the image, with around twenty churches, schools, and public buildings simply illustrated and numbered. A street index is provided in the lower right.
