Description

This large and detailed map of Nashville, Tennessee was issued locally in the early 1950s, at which time the city was cementing its reputation as the Country Music Capital of the World (and recovering from a terrible winter storm). Postwar suburban expansion is highlighted with concentric circles radiating from downtown in one-mile increments, including the neighborhoods of Belle Meade, Hillsboro, Richmond, Wood Bine, Montague, and Bordeaux. This growth was helped by the introduction of bus routes, which are highlighted in red throughout the image and numbered at the top of the page.

Numerous locations of interest are labeled, such as Vanderbilt University, Centennial Park, the Nashville Municipal Airport, and Fort Negley. Other named landmarks, now destroyed, include the State Hospital for the Criminally Insane, the Tennessee Vocational School for Colored Girls, and Gillespie Airfield. An inset map in the lower left shows the somewhat complex traffic patterns found in the Uptown District. An alphabetical street index is provided at the bottom of the page.

The map was drawn by W.T. Naive, J.W. Rich, and M.M. Harman. The date, somewhat obscured in the lower left, appears to be 1952, with copyright attributed to J.U.G. Rich. An earlier edition, 1942, is cataloged in 3 examples in WorldCat – the Wisconsin Historical Society, the University of Michigan, and the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign. That entry notes text on the verso, which is not present on this version. OCLC# 872526757
