After victory in the 1898 Spanish-American War, the United States acquired control of the Philippines from the defeated Spanish in exchange for about $20 million. Inconveniently for both powers, native Filipinos had been fighting for independence for several years and controlled most of the nation, with the exception of Manila, at the outbreak of the war.

Neither Spain nor the U.S. recognized the declaration, and the First Philippine Republic was forced underground and into a conflict with its new imperial overseers that became known as the Philippine–American War, or the Philippine Insurrection. Heavy fighting continued into 1902, though scattered guerilla actions and isolated pockets of resistance persisted throughout the period of American rule, until 1946.

This fascinating volume was published near the height of the conflict, in 1901, by the Government Printing Office in Washington, D.C. It contains Part 3 (of 5 total) of the Report of the Lieutenant-General Commanding the Army and consists primarily of the Report of Major General Lloyd Wheaton, commanding the department of Northern Luzon, and the report of Brigadier General J.F. Walsh, commander of the department of Southern Luzon (except above).

The 500+ pages provide detailed contemporary insight into the conflict; with firsthand accounts of engagements, copies of relevant correspondence, tables of statistics, and numerous folding maps designed to accompany descriptions of troop actions. Examples include the Expedition and Engagement of Pinauran, Action Between 28th Inf. U.S.V. and Filipino Rebels July 17, 1900, Provinces of Manila, Morong, and Infanta, and Expedition into the Province of Albany.
