This fascinating narrative was authorized by Supreme Allied Commander Dwight D. Eisenhower to commemorate the actions of the American Expeditionary Forces in northern Europe during the Second World War.

The contents of the volume omit prior actions in North Africa, Italy, and the Pacific, and focuses entirely on the campaign between the Normandy invasion and ultimate German surrender less than a year later. Descriptive text is supplemented by a variety of illustrative maps and diagrams.
