This punchy pictorial map of Arizona was drawn by Pulitzer-Prize winning cartoonist Reg Manning and originally published as part of his “Cartoon Guide” in 1938. This particular example was published in a later edition almost a decade afterward, but it retains the original 1938 date (lower center).
The image is packed with illustrated vignettes and accompanying labels showing an interesting mix of historical information and contemporary humor. Exaggerated topography is depicted pictorially, providing an emphasis on the natural beauty and desert climate.
The accompanying guidebook contains over 100 pages providing a wealth of information on the state’s points of interest, history, climate, agriculture, and wildlife. Cartoons, also illustrated by Manning, dot the pages and provide a glimpse into his talented career as an illustrator.
