Description

This fascinating piece of petroliana was published by the Standard Oil Company in 1937 to promote their products, primarily Red Crown gasoline, and encourage Americans to hit the road. Each player, up to six, controlled an automobile (not included) that started in the centerpiece. Spinning the dial dictates how many ‘miles’ can be traveled on each turn, with some providing further instructions or shortcuts.

Idyllic illustrations representing motor tourism are scattered throughout the negative spaces, including the requisite billboards advertising Standard Oil. Printed instructions on the verso, as well as a rubber stamp indicating this particular example was distributed by a Standard Oil dealer in Portland, Michigan.
