Description
This gelatin silver print was issued as a wirephoto by United Press International, Inc. to accompany an October 23, 1964 article about China’s first successful test of a nuclear device. According to text on the verso, titled RED CHINA’S NUCLEAR EXPLOSION;
“This UPI NEWSMAP indicates the location where Communist China exploded her first nuclear device to join the world’s four atomic powers. The test site, near a lake named Lob Nor, is in the Takalamakan Desert of the remote Central Asian province of Sinkiang.”
