Description
The frank admission quoted above can be found in the introduction to this book, issued by the U.S. War Department in 1944 to troops in all theaters. The text then provides an anecdote of mistaken identity between British and French aviators, though American forces also had numerous cases of friendly fire.
To help combat “mistakes in recognition, on the sea, on land, and in the air”, this publication provides illustrations, profile views, and available operating information on the various aircraft produced by the UK, Germany, Japan, and the United States. Instructions on aerial recognition, friend/foe chart, manufacturer information, and a glossary of terms also provided at the beginning of the volume.
Each page is dated and marked RESTRICTED, with the original 1943 contents supplemented by an additional group dated 1944. This particular example may have been used aboard a ship during the war, as it’s faintly marked ‘Galley Copy Do Not Remove’ in orange on the front cover.

Condition Description: 9" x 6" booklet, bound in string, containing diagrams and accompanying descriptions of aircraft, organized by nationality. Covers are heavily soiled and torn, torn title page, and faint damp staining in the introduction. Contents are generally good to very good, with slightly toned pages, creased corners, and scattered soiling. Supplemental sheets, dated 1944, are a bit brighter.
