Description

This charming map of Rapid City, South Dakota was issued by the Chamber of Commerce and sponsored by AAA to boost tourism in the years immediately following the end of World War II. It attempts to leverage the popularity of the Black Hills region and nearby attractions like Mount Rushmore, while also highlighting many recreational opportunities and local businesses.

A central street plan identifies the primary transportation routes in red. Several photographs and illustrated vignettes visualizing various attractions, including a reminder in the lower center that ‘You’re in Indian Country!’. A Rapid City Directory in the margins lists motor courts, restaurants, churches, hotels, hospitals, and nightclubs. Descriptive text, a calendar of events, and additional photographs can be found in the verso.

Photos provided by Bell Studio. Lithographed by Holmgren’s Inc. in Rapid City around 1948, based on the text on the verso.
