Description

This fascinating Space Race composition was published by Rand McNally in 1958 to celebrate the recent launch of the Jupiter and Vanguard rockets. Jupiter-C delivered the first American artificial satellite into orbit about four months after the Soviets launched Sputnik I.

One side of the sheet presents several illustrations, including one of the aforementioned rocket launching the Vanguard 1 satellite (the fourth, after Explorer I and two Sputniks). A diagram of the atmosphere is accompanied by an amusing oversimplification of the future of space exploration.

The verso presents a detailed photographic representation of the moon, noting the poles and major physical features. Herein was the next goalpost for the Space Race contenders. Basic illustrations of the rockets and their respective satellite payloads are also included.
