Description
This attractive antique political map of Europe was published in Chicago by the prominent firm of Rand McNally. While undated, the inclusion of British Cyprus and Petrograd (renamed from St. Petersburg), indicates a date of printing around 1914. Red markings across eastern France indicate this example may have been used by a previous owner to track the front during World War I.
Vibrant colors delineate national borders across the continent, including a unified Germany, new Balkan states, and the massive Russian Empire. Topographic details are depicted with fine hachures, emphasizing major mountain ranges like the Alps, Urals, and Caucasus. Also of interest are pictorial depictions of the Pripyat marshes and extensive lowlands between the Ural and Volga Rivers.

Condition Description: Color lithographed pocket map printed on a thin sheet and disbound from original brown cloth covered boards (separate, but present). Heavy wear along folds, including about 5" of toning and a repaired split in the lower right, with some minor image loss. Another repaired tear, about 3", in the upper center. Splits at fold intersections and a small hole in the center left margin, where previously bound. Red markings indicate this example may have been used to track the WWI western front by a previous owner. About good condition overall.
