This detailed folding map of San Mateo County was published by the San Francisco Office of Rand McNally & Company in 1946. Originally retailing for $1.00, the work belongs to a comprehensive series of California county guides issued by the firm for an eager, increasingly mobile post-war public.
The image provides an intricate snapshot of the transportation network, city limits, major infrastructure, and physical landscape. Highways and railroads are shown with almost equal importance, though the 20th-century transportation revolution would see the former reign supreme.
