Rand McNally & Co’s New Township Map of Iowa
$125.00
Uncommon 19th century township plan of Iowa sponsored by Farmer’s Insurance Company.
Description
By the time this map was published by Rand McNally in 1886, Iowa was largely settled by a diverse mix of Americans (both white and black) and European immigrants. Numerous towns are labeled within each township and county, and a complex network of rail lines connects nearly every corner of the state.
The economy was still largely agricultural, which is reflected by the sponsor of this particular edition – Farmer’s Insurance Company (not to be confused with the company operating today, which began in 1922). Farmer’s was founded in Cedar Rapids in 1860, and this map is a fold out in a promotional advertising booklet. The accompanying 7 page pamphlet includes a calendar for the year 1886, the annual statement of the company, policy conditions aimed specifically at farmers, and numerous testimonials from satisfied customers.
