This long-winded text, taken from the title page, provides a breathless summary of the contents of this guidebook, published in Chicago by Rand McNally & Company in 1917. While the majority of the volume is comprised of the comprehensive street index, there is a wealth of other contemporary info presented within its pages; plus advertisements, tips for travelers, and a large folding map in the back.
This double-sided street plan vividly highlights the city’s various green spaces; mostly parks, boulevards, and cemeteries (popular outdoor destinations at the time). Team tracks (localized rail spurs) and dock facilities of the Merchants Lighterage Company are also shown in green. An accompanying list of railroads identifies over two dozen different companies in operation in eight different depots scattered across the city.

Condition Description: 286 pp. guidebook, plus five pages of contemporary advertisements with a map re-attached with archival tape. Measures approximately 3.75" x 5.75" with glued binding and original paper covers. Contents are generally quite good, with a bit of edge wear and light soiling, consistent with age. Includes accompanying fold-out map, approximately 20.6" x 25.9", with light staining where affixed to the back cover. One small 3" jagged tear in the lower right has been repaired.
