Description
The late 19th century saw an explosion in the railroad industry across the United States, and several firms grew to accommodate the need for related publications such as maps, tickets, and timetables. Perhaps none were so successful as Rand McNally & Co., established in Chicago in 1868.
This map and directory of Illinois was issued by the firm in 1882 and includes a wealth of contemporary information on local transportation routes, railroad operations, and various communities across the state. The fold-out map shows each county in brightly lithographed color, with an emphasis on the rail network and civic organization. Inset maps show the Tri-City area of Davenport, Moline, and Rock Island as well as a city plan of Chicago.
