Description

This information-packed road map of the central and western United States was published by Rand McNally & Company of Chicago in 1932. Obtained from the official company corporate archives, this example includes dated copyright rubberstamps from the Library of Congress, reflecting an interesting and uncommon provenance.

A meticulous image uses several styles of lines to present the various highway surfaces available to motorists between the Mississippi and Pacific Coast. Conditions ranged from paved to dirt, with ‘Main’ and ‘Other’ roads shown in two different thicknesses. Distances between points are noted and both state and U.S. highways are numbered throughout. Topography is depicted with soft hachures and an interesting variety of locations of interest (parks, geographic features, historic sites, etc.) are labeled. The double-sided sheet captures the entirety of Route 66, the Main Street of America, stretching from Chicago to Los Angeles.
