This map distills the formidable Tokyo transportation system into something a little more manageable, showing the routes of trains, electric cars, private rail and subways in a complex, but readable form. Connecting lines and station size is provided via representative fonts and color. Today the transportation system in the greater Tokyo area services over 20 million travelers daily, and remains a network of largely independent operators.

The Tuttle Publishing Company was founded in 1948 in Tokyo under the approval of the occupying administration with the aspirations of publishing books “to span the East and the West.” The founder, Charles Tuttle, was an officer in the United States Army and a member of the forces stationed in Tokyo in 1945.
