Description

This map, published by Warner & Beers in Chicago as part of H.H. Lloyd & Co.’s Atlas of the United States, offers a fascinating overview of America during the mid-1870s. State and territory borders are beginning to approach their modern outline and scope, with delicate hand color outlining each across the page.

The railroad network is obviously emphasized, with bold hashed tracks showing the completed routes. Those that are proposed or under construction are shown with a lighter line. Topography is haphazardly depicted with hachure, showing an irregular outline of the Rocky Mountains from Montana to Colorado.
