Description

This inflammatory map of Europe offers an apparently authoritative overview of the racial composition of the approximately 1 million people that emigrated to America in 1905. Demographics provided for the ethnic divisions and subdivisions indicate that the immigrants originated largely from southern Italy and Slavic nations. Also of note is the large Jewish population, many of whom were fleeing Russia to avoid conscription in the Russo-Japanese War.

The map was lithographed in Washington, D.C. by the Andrew B. Graham Company for inclusion in Howard B. Grose’s Aliens or Americans?, published in New York in 1906 by the Young People’s Missionary Movement. The volume encourages the evangelization of the multitudes of newcomers into American Protestant Christianity. The descriptive text, charts, and photographs of various immigrant families was deliberately designed to incite the younger generation to action. Chapter titles like ‘The Alien Advance, The Eastern Invasion, and The Foreign Peril of the City characterize the overall attitude.
