Description

This lovely copperplate engraved map shows the historical French province of Quercy, located in the southwestern part of the country. The area was also known as Cadurcium during the Roman era, named after one of the local Gallic tribes.

The image is centered on the city of Caors, the historical center of Quercy situated on the banks of the Lot River. Geographic features like hills and forests are depicted pictorially and accentuated by vibrant hand color.

The map features two decorative cartouches. The lower right includes the Royal Coat of Arms of France and Navarre, as well as what appears to be a breed of hunting dog. The sport was tremendously popular among the aristocracy at the time the map was issued.

Published in Amsterdam by Jan Jansson in 1639.
