This remarkable woodcut world map is the second edition of Sebastian Münster’s famous hemispheric reduction of Ptolemaic cartography, published in Basel c. 1588 for his monumental Cosmographia. Titled Ptolemeisch General Tafel / die hable kugel der Welt begreifende (“Ptolemaic General Map / containing the half-sphere of the World”), the image represents one of the most iconic 16th-century visual bridges between ancient classical geography, the Renaissance, and early modern European print culture.

Münster, a German cartographer, linguist, and Franciscan friar, played a pivotal role in the intellectual transition toward the early Enlightenment. Through his 1540 edition of Ptolemy’s Geographia and his subsequent Cosmographia (first issued in 1544), Münster democratized geographic knowledge across Europe. His work revived Classical antiquity while systematically incorporating the explosive influx of discoveries from the Age of Exploration.

The composition is dramatically framed by twelve stylized wind heads (venti), a classic Ptolemaic decorative motif symbolizing the classical winds that governed navigation and climate. Enclosed within the elaborate border is a global geography as defined by the 2nd-century Greek scholar. Notable elements, some of which survived into the modern era, include a landlocked Indian Ocean, a mountainous source of the Nile River, and an oversized Sri Lanka (labeled Taprobana).
