Description
This interesting assortment of articles from the Chicago Tribune provides fascinating details on early planning for a proposed 1992 World’s Fair. Organized to commemorate the 500th anniversary of Columbus’ arrival in the New World, the project had significant backing from private sponsors and Mayor Jan Byrne.
However, the financial failure of the 1984 Louisiana World Exposition led to most public figures withdrawing support and the plan ultimately failed. A map shows the proposed fairgrounds along the city’s lakefront, essentially occupying the same footprint as the 1933 Century of Progress.
