Description
This massive WWII-era manuscript survey shows the grounds of the (former) American Creosoting Company in southeast Indianapolis, near the corner of South Sherman Drive and Terrace Avenue. The firm specialized in the application of creosote to preserve wooden utility poles and railroad ties before merging with Union Bag in 1956. A scale of 1″ = 50′ allows for the transmission of incredible detail, including the outlines of major structures (buildings, chemical tanks, etc.), relevant railroad infrastructure (signals, crossings, hose houses, etc.), and more. Penciled annotations note several updates, reflected in the short table of revisions in the lower right.
The map was originally drawn by the Office of the Chief Engineer of the Cleveland, Cincinnati, Chicago and St. Louis Railway (a subsidiary of the New York Central) in March, 1939. This example has been updated to reflect changes as of April, 1940, only to be declared void approximately four years later (see note above title).
