Description
This beautiful antique map presents a charming overview of the historic German region of Henneberg, a princely county of the Holy Roman Empire and home to the noble family of the same name. Pictorial elements like trees and hills generalize the landscape while toponyms identify a fascinating variety of cities (notably, Meiningen and Bamberg), estates, geographic features, religious facilities, and rural villages.
The distinctive coat of arms (appropriately, a hen) can be seen in the upper left. The dedicatory text in the lower right indicates the map was originally created by Henricus Hondius. This later example was published in Amsterdam around 1640 by Jan Jansson.

Condition Description: Copperplate engraved map with attractive modern hand color on a strong sheet of laid paper. French text on verso. Moderate transference from the black ink (most evident on the right side) and marginal wear including chipped corners, toning, light foxing, and a few small closed tears. Faint discoloration along the vertical centerfold. Good condition overall.
