Description

This finely engraved map shows the United States west of the Great Plains and is based off an earlier issue by Samuel Augustus Mitchell. This version has been updated to highlight the various regions containing gold (yellow), silver (silver), and cinnabar (green).

The American West is known for its abundance of the first two minerals, while cinnabar is the only practical ore from which mercury can be extracted. The boundaries of the Public Domain are also highlighted in red. The map was issued to accompany a report titled “Public Domain” by Thomas Donaldson in 1883.
