Description
Yerba Buena is an approximately 120-acre island in San Francisco Bay situated between the eponymous city and Oakland, California. Its role as a defensive fortification was first considered during the American Civil War, though official improvements didn’t begin until afterwards.
This map, published in a government report in 1872, shows a series of proposed redoubts and artillery batteries that would have been part of Camp Yerba Buena, established by the Army in 1868. They were never constructed, though the island remains in use by the Coast Guard to this day.
