19th century map of Vincennes, Sullivan, Merom and Carlisle.

This map is from a state and historical atlas of Indiana that was published by Baskin, Forester & Co. and sold on a subscription basis. Agents from the firm would travel from town to town and offer advertising space and custom engravings in the atlas in exchange for sponsorship dollars and agreeing to buy them once they were available. Some buyers would have engravings of their house, place of business, and even prized animals (with names)!

The map covers Willow Street from the cemetery down to St. Clair. Washington Ave. is labeled “Plank Road” (it literally was built from wooden planks) and you can see the old railroad depot behind the current location of Jay-C. The seminary on Sixth and Hart was constructed in 1807 and was a college, orphanage, and common school before becoming a seminary. It was torn down in 1883.
