Description

The villages of Beekman town, Tarrytown, and Irving, all in Westchester County, New York, are situated about 25 miles north of the metropolis. The area was made famous by Washington Irving’s classic tale, The Legend of Sleepy Hollow, first published in 1819.

This map, issued just over 25 years later, shows the composition of the region in exacting detail. Buildings are individually outlined and shown connected by a variety of streets and footpaths. Industries and local businesses are labeled, along with large property owners and primary transportation routes.

The map was published in 1867 in New York by Frederic Beers & Company.
