Description

This charming vintage map of Bangkok was published in 1930 by the Royal State Railway Department of Siam, the predecessor organization to the State Railway of Thailand. Pink, green, and yellow colors highlight the original city, business, and residential districts, respectively.

Places of interest are numbered throughout the image and correspond to accompanying indices on either side. Post offices, transportation routes, hotels, temples, consulates, and more can all be easily located using the system of letters and numbers in the border.

Also included is the 324-page guidebook in which the map was originally issued. Its pages present detailed traveler information, sample itineraries, color plates, large-scale maps, and dozens of contemporary advertisements. The map and book provide an exhaustive overview of the kingdom on the cusp of important political change. Just two years after publication, a bloodless coup, centered in Bangkok, overthrew the absolute monarchy and prompted the introduction of Thailand’s first constitution.
