Description

This lovely copperplate engraving was issued in Nicholas de Fer’s Atlas Curieux in 1715 and shows the majestic hedge maze at the Palace of Versailles, just southwest of Paris.

Fountains and sculptures, many of which relate to Aesop’s Fables, are individually numbered and depicted in profile. The labyrinth was replaced with an arboretum in 1778 by Louis XVI, the last monarch who resided within the palace.
