Description

This copperplate engraved map was published by Nicholas de Fer in 1718 and shows the city of Caen, on the banks of the Orne River. The historic castle and chateau, built by William the Conqueror around 1060, is prominently featured in the center left. The keep was destroyed after the French Revolution, and the castle sustained additional heavy damage during World War II, when it was used as a barracks.

Elsewhere, important buildings, geographic features, roads, and gardens are shown. The image is completed by a decorative strapwork cartouche, a coat of arms, and a compass rose, indicating that the map is oriented slightly towards the northwest.
