Description

“Pilot Charts depict averages in prevailing winds and currents, air and sea temperatures, wave heights, ice limits, visibility, barometric pressure, and weather conditions at different times of the year. The information used to compile these averages was obtained from oceanographic and meteorological observations over many decades during the late 18th and 19th centuries.” – National Geospatial Intelligence Agency

This information-packed chart of the North Pacific Ocean was published by the United States Hydrographic Office in February 1944. Requiring regular updates to incorporate the latest data, pilots’ charts were immensely useful tools for the millions of tons of shipping crossing the Atlantic during the war. An explanation on the left side of the page is helpful in deciphering the many numbers, symbols, and lines. The verso presents Sunlight-Moonlight diagrams for Sept ’43 through August ’44.
