Description
This uncommon pictorial map was illustrated by Ralph C. Porter, Jr. and published by the Union County (New Jersey) Park System in 1933. Oriented with northeast at the top to maximize space within the borders, the image shows the massive 2,000+ acre Watchung Reservation, the largest nature reserve in the county.
Locations of interest both new and old are labeled throughout, with a variety of transportation routes providing access to each. Notable examples include the baseball diamond, the deserted village of Feltville, Girl and Boy Scout cabins, and several ruins. The ‘Young Pine Forest’ refers to an ongoing project by the Civilian Conservation Corps to plant non-native trees in straight rows. It would later become known as ‘The Enchanted Forest’, because of its eerie environment.
The map is rare, with only one entry noted in OCLC at Harvard University.
