Description

“The map on the reverse side of this sheet was prepared to assist the guests of Stoddard’s Restaurant in identifying the points of interest visible from this beautifully situated dining room…In Stoddard’s Restaurant is served food such as one would expect to find in the home of the ideal housewife.” – Text, verso.

This innovative bit of restaurant advertising looks to replicate (in a simplified fashion) the scenic view from a dining room atop Butler Hall at Columbia University. Nearly two dozen landmarks and locations of interest around New York City are illustrated and labeled, occasionally with descriptive text. Of note are Sing Sing Prison and the Bronx County Jail – both to be avoided, the Polo Grounds (home of the New York Giants), and the site of the 1939 World’s Fair, which helps to date the map to around that time.
