Description

This massive and vibrantly colored printed canvas advertisement wants to ‘Clear the Air’ about Phillips 66 Trop-Arctic Motor Oil. According to contemporary magazine ads (not included), the oil has special additives that traps contaminants in engine exhaust that are recirculated through the vehicle’s cabin. “So your engine stays cleaner longer. Therefore, so does the air.”

This spurious logic mimicking concern for the environment is reinforced with a bright blue sky, verdant green grass, and blooming flowers. Intended for outdoor display, with double-stitched loops at the top and bottom of the sheet for hanging rods or rollers.

Created and distributed in the late 1960s or early 1970s by the Plaza Display Corporation of Los Angeles on behalf of Phillips 66.
