Description

Published by a local exactly 100 years after the Declaration of Independence was signed at the courthouse, this map of Philadelphia is one of utility and practicality. Information on election wards, horse drawn railroads and steam railroads are provided in three different languages; English, French and German. This reflects the city’s position as a cosmopolitan destination for immigrants, especially after the revolutionary upheavals in Europe just a few decades prior.

Locations of interest are labeled, including cemeteries, churches, prominent businesses and transportation depots. The grounds of the Centennial Exposition, the first World’s Fair held in the United States, can be seen west of the Schuylkill River. There, guests could see and experience new inventions such as the telephone, typewriter, and Heinz ketchup. Published locally by Orlando Gray for inclusion in his national atlas.
